Oobleck is one of the most bizarre and mesmerizing things you’ll ever touch. In fact, oobleck is so fascinating by itself that playing with it doesn’t need any accessories or any color added. However, if you want take oobleck play to the next level then this St Patrick’s Day theme is right for you.

What is oobleck?

Oobleck is a so-called non-newtonian fluid, similar to quicksand. It’s viscosity (or fluidity) depends on the pressure you put on it.

Wait what? Let me explain…

If you take some oobleck in your hand and squeeze it (apply pressure) then oobleck will be a solid and you can shape it for instance into a ball. However, if you open your hand again (no pressure applied) then oobleck will become liquid and running through your fingers.

It’s really so cool to touch and you probably have not touch anything like it before.

Oobleck recipe - how to make oobleck

To make oobleck you basically only need 2 ingredients:

  • 2 cups corn starch
  • 1 cup water
  • optional: add a few drops of food color (tip: dye the water BEFORE adding to the corn starch. It’s difficult to mix afterwards)
When you mix the corn starch and the water you will see if you want it a little more runny (just add more water) or more dense (add more corn starch).

Transform your oobleck play into a St. Patricks Day memory

If you want to transform your oobleck play into a St. Patrick’s day memory then add some green food color to your oobleck (for easier mixing dye water before adding to the cornstarch).

Add some little cauldrons and some gold coins and you are all set for a St. Patrick’s Day your kids will remember!
