1. Counting practice by glueing fall confetti

Write a number between 1 and 20 on a sheet of paper and let your child glue the correct number of fall confetti on it.

This is also a good opportunity to practice using liquid glue, such as to use only a small amount of glue 😜.

2. Investigate fall items with scissors, hole puncher and magnifying glass

On your next walk outside grab some fall items such as leaves, pine cones, berries, nuts and sticks.

Once you are home, get out some toddler scissors, single hole puncher, magnifying glass and take a closer look at everything.

Don’t forget that clean up is part of the fun. Give your child a dust pan and brush and let him help with the clean up!

3. Play dough hedgehog with tooth picks

Tooth picks are a great addition to any play dough play in general. Lots of  different possibilities how kids can play with play dough and tooth picks. I’m sure you’d be surprised what they come up with!

During the fall season a hedgehog made out of play dough and tooth picks is a simple activity that even very young kids, maybe starting around 1.5 years old, can enjoy.

Lots of training for those fine motor muscles!

4. Pine cone and rubber band boredom buster

This activity is as simple as it can get! Grab some pine cones on your next walk outside and hand your kids a few rubber bands.

My kids were busy with this for almost 30 minutes while I made dinner!

5. Sweep up some fall leaves

Let your child clean up some fall leaves. It’s a great and simple exercise for practical life skills.

Kids as young as 1 year old will enjoy this activity but even my 5 year old will get really into this.

You could use any brush or broom you have at home. We have this set from Melissa and Doug which my kids play with literally every single day. Just imagine how clean my house must be at any given time!

6. Fall sensory bin with real hay

kids hand touch hay straw

This fall sensory bin has lots of things to discover for little kids.

The bale of hay is for sure the “center piece” of this bin. The smell is amazing and kids can feel the texture of the hay and try to get single straws out of the bale.

I also added dried indian corn cubs to it with the leaves attached. Again lots of different textures to feel and sounds to hear.

I also added a few farm animal that we already had from a wooden toddler puzzle. I like to use these often since they are easy to grab for little hands and don’t get lost underneath all the straw and corn. However,  any farm animal figurines you have on hand will do.

7. Fall sticky wall

A “sticky wall” is always a hit with toddlers. You’ll need clear contact paper which is sticky on one side. Draw the outline of a tree on the non-sticky side.

Hang it on a wall or window with the non-sticky side facing towards the wall. That way your child can now put “stuff” onto the sticky side and decorate the tree.

For this fall tree I simply cut some brown construction paper into little squares. Some small pom poms in yellow, orange and red serve as “berries”. I also got some artificial leaves for my kids to put on the tree.

8. Paint on fall items

Next time you take a walk outside collect some nice, interesting nature items. Things like different leaves, pine cones, sticks, stones, berries or nuts are some examples.

Let your kids paint on these items the way they like. It’s best if you use finger paint since it just washes off and makes cleanup super easy.

9. Pine cone experiment

A science experiment for kids could not be any easier but still fascinating than this pine cone experiment.

Grab two pine cones from outside and put one in a glass of water (you can also just rinse it with water). Leave the other one as is for comparison.

After about 5-10 minutes you’ll see how the pine cone closes. Once it dries, it will open again.

10. Sketch a pumpkin using chalk

Let your kids try to sketch a pumpkin using chalk on a blackboard. It’s an easy enough shape even for the littlest of artists.
