The best homemade playdough recipe

easy playdough recipe

This simple playdough recipe is very easy to make, doesn’t cost much and the playdough is super soft, taste safe, doesn’t stick to your hands and lasts for well over 6 months! This is the best homemade playdough recipe you’ll find and it always turns out great.

Ingredients for your homemade playdough recipe:

This homemade playdough recipe will make plenty of playdough (~900g) and is the equivalent of 10 store-bought play-doh cups (3oz).

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons creme of tartar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • optional: food coloring or glitter

How to make your homemade playdough

Put all ingredients in a pot and mix with a spoon. If you only want to make one color, you can add food coloring at this point. I usually want to do a couple of different colors and therefore split the dough later and dye them separately.

Heat up you mixture on medium heat while stirring continuously until the mixture thickens. This will take about 3 to 5 minutes.

Take the dough out of the pot and let it cool down for a few minutes. Knead the dough for a  minute or two.

If you haven’t dyed your playdough yet then split your dough into as many portions as you want to make different colors. You can dye the playdough with food colors or add glitter if you like.

Remember to invite your kids to make this recipe. It’s simple enough and part of the fun!

How to store your homemade playdough

Wrap your homemade playdough in plastic wrap and put it in a ziplock bag. Store at room temperature for months. My last playdough is still super soft after nearly 10 months!
